Abstract:

The Soldier fly species Stratiomys longicornis (Scopoli, 1763) is reported from Finland for the first time. A single specimen was found on June 9, 2013 in southeastern Finland (Sa: Lappeenranta, Tuosa) near an industrial dump area that also functions as an intermediate depot for wood for the nearby paper mill. The specimen was photographed sitting on a cow parsley Anthriscus sylvestris surrounded by mixed habitats consisting e.g. of a grove, a spruce forest, mixed forest, roadside meadow plants, a stream and an artificial pond. A table of characteristic features as well as photographs of the five Stratiomys species known from Northern Europe are provided.
