Abstract:

In the summer 2013 an insect survey was performed on state-owned nature conservation areas in Lapland. All the empidoid flies (Diptera: Empidoidea, excluding Dolichopodidae) were identified from the collected material. The purpose of this empidoid survey was to gain information of the species assemblage and abundance of the empidoid flies in Lapland and to create a basis for the assessment of their conservation status in 2020. A total of 37 Malaise traps were set at 18 sites consisting of Natura 2000 areas and other conservation sites. The traps were placed mostly on wetland habitats (aapamires, swamps, streams, springs etc.). The sampling period extended from early June till mid-September. Over 4500 individuals were caught altogether, consisting of 108 species. The most important findings were four species new to science and seven species new to Finland. In addition, 84 species were recorded as new to different biogeographical provinces in Lapland. Some of the species were recorded well beyond their earlier northernmost sites of occurrence in Finland. The survey yielded significant species recordings from almost all the sites in the study. The most species-rich sites were Värriö Strict Nature Reserve, Törmäoja and Pallas–Yllästunturi National Park.
